This month will feature Multi-Axis Turning Techniques by FLWT members, Ralph Mosher and Jeffrey Cheramie.

This will be a great opportunity to learn the special techniques used to make some very unique turnings exposing multiple facets. These techniques can be applied to spindle turning projects as well as other things and the demonstration by Ralph and Jeff should serve to get your imaginations rev’d up to try some things on your own. Come out and join us for an informative night, enjoy the company and and learn some great new turning techniques.

FLWT is hosting national turner Andy DiPietro (www.woodartforms.com) for our April monthly meeting.  Mr. DiPietro is known for his elegant hollow forms with unique surface treatments and dyed colors and he will be speaking at a special Friday evening club meeting on April 20th.  His talk that evening will be on his work and journey through woodturning along with his thoughts on evolving toward a personal style.  On Saturday April 21st, Andy will be demonstrating his techniques for developing a pleasing shape, hollowing and coloring a vessel with dyes.  The Saturday event will be an extended demonstration of all aspects of Andy’s techniques and there will be a lot of interesting information presented for turners of all levels.

Our Friday night meeting starts with a show and share at 6:00pm with a short business meeting and Andy’s lecture beginning at about 6:45pm.  The Saturday demonstration of turning, hollowing and coloring will be from 9:00am until approximately 3:00pm.  We will break for a short lunch during the day but the club will not be providing lunch so please come prepared with your own.  The Friday meeting is of course free and open to all.   The Saturday demonstration is also open to all and is only $35.

Thanks to Jerry for his dedication to woodturning, our club and the students of Byron-Bergen High School.

On Saturday March 3rd, FLWT offered a Pen Turning workshop for members. FLWT Board Adviser, Jeffery Cheramie taught the workshop including instruction on how to cut mark and drill the wood blanks for the pens, how to mount the blanks on the pen mandrel, how turn turn the blanks and how to finish and assemble the pens for use.

Participants watched and worked intently along with the help of several FLWT member assistants. At the end of the day, everyone went home with at least one completed pen and parts to make another pen or two and also the tooling necessary to produce pens in the their home shops. Most importantly they all learned and applied new skills at the lathe.

Thanks to all of the participants and member volunteers for their efforts and support and a special thank you to Jeff Cheramie for a fantastic job putting together and teaching a great workshop for the benefit of our membership!

This month will feature Turning a Segmented Bud Vase by FLWT member, Ed Lehman.

THis should be a good opportunity to learn how to make a nice decorative object from one of FLWT’s long time members. Come out and join us for an informative night, enjoy the company and and learn how to make a new project.

This month will feature Turning an Off-center Platter by FLWT Vice President, Bruce Trojan. 

If you are interested in what it takes to turn an object off-center on the lathe then this one is for you.  Bruce will teach us all about the entire process and the special techniques needed to produce a beautiful off-center platter.  Come out and join us for an informative night, enjoy the company and and learn some new turning techniques.

Last year, Finger Lakes Woodturners applied for an Educational Opportunity Grant (EOG) from our parent organization The American Association of Woodturners (AAW).  Our request was for grant proceeds to support purchasing additional educational materials for our library and for new mini-lathes and equipment to support our efforts to teach the art of Woodturning.  In April of 2011 we were awarded a grant of $750 to support our efforts.

We are pleased to announce that with the proceeds from the EOG grant and minimal additional club funds we have purchased a selection of additional books and DVD’s for our growing library and also two mini-lathes from Penn State Industries.  This gives the club more educational material on woodtutrning and two great lathes to support workshops and demos for our members and the general public.  Thanks to all who participated in the grant application and of course to the AAW for providing us with the funds to improve the capabilities of our club.

This month will feature a demonstration of turning a 5-inch Hand-held Mirror by Mike Hachey.

This project will give you an opportunity to develop both face grain and spindle turning skills with the added bonus of creating a nice gift item. Please join us at the next meeting to see the project turned from start to finish.
