Following our Monthly Meeting, we will engage in a remote demonstration with Alan Stratton for a Faux Sea Urchin tutorial.

This is a two part demonstration. In part 1, we will turn a perfect sphere without any jig Turning a sphere is an excellent basic skill that all turners should master.

In part 2 and using the sphere from part 1, we will transform the sphere to be similar to a sea urchin shell often used in holiday ornaments. This will include multi-axis turning and carving.

Alan was introduced to woodturning when at university and newly married, he needed furniture on a limited budget. The university had a hobby shop with a lathe. Shortly after graduation, he purchased his first lathe-a tough go for an apartment dweller–and continued to turn. When family responsibilities lessened, he started a website and producing weekly woodturning videos. Alan’s specialty is turning diversity, he likes to try new projects and explore new frontiers. He hosts the annual Ornament challenge now over twelve years and growing.
