Laurent Niclot Coming to Finger Lakes Woodturners

Laurent Niclot comes to Rochester, New York

Finger Lakes Woodturners is thrilled to host Laurent Niclot in Rochester, New York on March 23-25 2024. His visit features an all day demonstration on Saturday, March 23, and two one-day workshops on Sunday, March 24, and Monday, March 25.

Originally from Southern France, now living in Colorado Laurent has always loved wood. While working on a degree in woodworking and furniture design, he discovered woodturning and knew it was his passion. At age 20, he participated in the six-month long woodturning class at the Escoulen School in Aiguines, France with Jean-François Escoulen and Yann Marot. After the class, Laurent was hired and worked as the studio coordinator for 3 years. Today, he continues to make work and teach woodturning. His interests include traditional woodturning, texturing, coloring, multi-axis turning, carving and hollowing. He has taught his techniques around the world, including Belgium, France, Canada and the US. Laurent considers his work experimental and his aim is to make pieces that are sculptural, decorative, and designed with a strong message or a story to tell.

All-Day Demonstration

9:00 am – 4:00 pm
St. Michaels Woodshop

Carving of the Hollow Form: Using a previously turned form, drawing of a spiral design, carving using power tools to make the design both concave and convex. Then, using a wood burner and rotary tools, texturing of the flutes and beads created. Then coloring the form with ink and gilding wax (optional). The techniques used in the presentation can be applied on a multitude of forms. The texturing possibilities presented will open the participants minds and encourage them to try these techniques with whatever tools they have available, without having to procure specific burrs.

Miniature Teapot: Turning of a miniature teapot (approximately an inch) using the bedan and demonstration on how to use it with the bevel up for spindle turning, hollowing of the teapot with miniature hollowing tools. Then turning of the lid and the spout (magnifiers not included) and coloring using India ink and gilding wax to create the Damascus steel effect. Finally, demonstration on how the make the handle using a wire and a cotton string on the lathe.

Multi-Axis Drop: Turning and turning off-center of a drop using a spindle gouge and a skew. Then carving of the top of the drop using gouges and rasps to make it thinner and have two different curves on the back and the front giving it an illusion of movement. And finally, texturing of the drop using a woodburner to create a Steampunk design, a combination of gears and metal plates, and coloring using Inda ink and gilding wax.

Turning Mini Hollow Forms
Participants will be introduced to turning mini hollow forms. Everyone will have the opportunity to create several different small hollow forms, of varying shapes and sizes. Laurent will also discuss gauging the thickness and introduce other ways you can use mini hollowing in teapots, ornaments, boxes and more. If time allows, or students are attending both days, other forms including a multi-axis drop will be discussed.

The material fee includes all the wood required.

We will send a list of tools to bring, or you can borrow from our full compliment of turning tools.

About the St. Michael's Facility

Finger Lakes Woodturners runs workshops at St. Michaels Woodshop, 691 St. Paul St., Rochester, NY, a not-for-profit organization that offers life skills to urban youth through the art of woodworking. The skills and character traits the students develop at St. Michael’s give them a sense of self-worth and helps them establish habits essential to productive living. Several of our members volunteer at St. Michael's to teach woodturning skills to the students.

We are thrilled to have a location to set up our ten full-size lathes, along with an assortment of chucks and turning tools, for workshops, and member-only events. The combination of the St. Michael's space and the FLWT lathes and equipment lets us present a world-class facility for woodturning training.
