Scott Grove – National Demonstrator Visit Oct 24-27, 2019

Finger Lakes Woodturners are hosting a visit by Scott Grove, a nationally recognized designer and maker. Scott will provide the evening demonstration for the monthly meeting of Finger Lakes Woodturners on Thursday Oct 24. NOTE: this is not our usual 3rd Thursday meeting date. The meeting will be held at Isaac Heating and Cooling, as usual.

The program for the Thursday meeting session will include a review of Scott’s personal history, which includes the time he was the Shop Manager for Wendell Castle at RIT. For folks who might not know Wendell Castle, he is often described as one of the most important post war furniture designers. Scott will also discuss and demonstrate his approach to mold making and resin casting. He will demonstrate these techniques by using a burl and a pine cone.

Examples of Scott’s previous work are available on his web site, and his full bio background is available here

Scott will also deliver a demonstration titled ” Molds, Casting and Resins n’ Wood ” on Saturday Oct 26 from 9am to 4pm at the Isaac Heating and Cooling location, will include the following topics:

This two-part demonstration will be action packed with lots of great information.

Part 1

Cold Metal Casting and Reproduction for Embellishment

This special session is dedicated to mold making, reproduction, and cold metal casting to create or reproduce just about any form and texture, whether it’s a found object such as a pine cone, a finely carved picture frame, a hand-sculpted finial, or your big toe. This process can embellish your work with unique details and avoid chain-store-bought ornamentation. Adding these features to your work or reproducing it in metal can be the perfect icing on the cake. No special equipment is required, in 20 minutes a mold and casting can be made, and it’s easier than baking that cake. Scott will expand and demonstrate techniques shared in his Fine Woodworking Magazine’s Fall 2015 Master Class article. Scott will make a mold and casting of a maple burl and other items.

Part 2

Resin ‘n Wood

Resin in woodworking is becoming more and more popular, and unfortunately, it’s becoming more confusing, too. Scott will demystify the process and demonstrate resin applications that include: infusion and plasticization for consolidation; coatings and hybrid (wood and resin) castings like the popular River® Table aesthetic; and pigment and mineral inlays. He will review a variety of common resins like epoxy, urethane, CA, UV, and polyester and when to use which. This is a must for anyone looking to expand their resin knowledge in woodworking.

Participants will gain a better understanding of resin and which to use for what application. A resource list of suppliers and a quick reference guide with application and properties will also be provided.

There is an “early bird” charge of $30. to attend the Saturday demonstration. After October 4, the price goes up to $40. so register now.

There will be a hands on workshop on Sunday October 27 at Scott Grove’s studio in the beautiful Bristol Hills of the Finger Lakes

4494 Kear Rd. Canandaigua, NY 14242

Expanding and continuing on Scott’s Molds, Casting, and Resins n’ Wood demonstrations, participants will create their own medallion hybrid castings using a variety of materials and techniques.  Experimentation and creative exploration will be encouraged. Scott is a highly enthusiastic and knowledgeable master craftsman; this is a class you won’t want to miss! Due to the casting process and unknown weather conditions, casting will be done either outside or in Scott’s spray booth. Participants should plan to bring your own bench stool, respirator, and safety glasses.

The cost of the workshop, which includes the necessary materials, is $75.
